Virginia E. Werthwein, 72, of Soldier's Grove, Wis., formerly of Hampshire, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, in St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Hampshire the daughter of Ernest and Wardrita Doty Gustafson. She had lived in the Hampshire and Burlington areas before moving to Wisconsin in 1964. Surviving are seven daughters, Judy (Jack) Dukey of Belvidere, Rita Carlson and Kay (Richard) Irving, both of Genoa, Sue (Gary) Olson of Elburn, Valerie (Orris) Ruth of Hampshire, Virginia Werthwein of Homer, Alaska, and Renee (Rick) Niederman of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two sons, Norman (Sandra) of Soldier's Grove, Wis., and Percy (Jane) of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; a sister, Lenna (Fred) Knaus, and a brother Leslie (Ethel) Gustafson, both of Hampshire; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger on Feb. 17, 1976. They were married April 30, 1938. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Ernadine Tegtman. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Zion United Methodist Church, Hampshire. Burial will be in Hampshire Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Thursday in Fredrick Funeral Home, Hampshire, and in the church on Friday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be made in her name in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 445, Hampshire, 60140. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in United Methodist Church, Soldier's Grove, Wis.
