In the above picture we find three women. On the left is Catherine Lis Stelmaszek. On the right is Dorothy Stelmaszek, which now takes us to the woman in the center. She was called Mary Gill, whereas it seems somewhat certain that her actual married surname was Gilewski.

Alfred Stelmaszek once wondered outloud how the Gilewski family was related to him, and that is in fact the mystery.

New Jersey Marriage Records show that in 1914 a Zygmund Gilewski married a Mary Lis. This seems almost certain to be the Mary in the photo. The question, actually the mystery is how is she related?

There is no easy answer which is perhaps why Alfred wondered. I suggest one possibility is that she is the daughter of George Lis, who eventually settled in Philadelphia. It is suspected that he made it to Philadelphia via Sayreville, New Jersey. Could his daughter have fallen in love and married in Sayreville, thus staying in the area?

Hopefully if anyone has any further information on this connection, they will let us know.
