Martha "Marty" Bunker Anderson, age 95, of Skipper's Cove in Waretown, NJ passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday May 1, 2014.
Marty was the third of eight children and the first of four girls. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, she was born June 30, 1918, at home in New Brunswick. A 1936 graduate of New Brunswick High School, Marty met her future husband John "Johnny" Anderson on a blind date. The couple married on December 28, 1940 and settled in Milltown, NJ.
Marty worked as a civil servant for the New Jersey Draft Board for 24 years.
In 1975 Marty and Johnny moved to their retirement home in Skipper's Cove. Marty was an avid outdoorswoman and enjoyed boating, fishing and accompanying her husband on hunting trips. One of their highlight retirement trips was an extended vacation to Alaska where they saw the midnight sun, marveled at glaciers and sailed the Inside Passage.
Marty had an artistic side and enjoyed hand painting ceramic Christmas villages and garden gnomes. She was an enthusiastic participant in creating house and boat decorations for the annual Skipper's Cove Festival of Lights Parade. She was also active in the First Aid Auxiliary and founded a club entitled Time Out for Fun.
Marty was preceded in death by her beloved husband John "Johnny" Anderson: her parents Henrietta Eden Lappert (sic) Bunker and James William Bunker, brothers Harold William Bunker; James Marshall Bunker, Robert "Bobby" Bunker and Leo Marsden Bunker; her sisters Ruth Bunker Novelli, Jean Eden Bunker Henning and Mary Bunker Foster; and her niece Stephanie Bunker Mula.
Marty is survived by her constant companion and loving cat, Cloey; her sisters in law Hildegard Bunker (widow of Bobby), of North Brunswick, NJ and Grace Russi Bunker (widow of Leo) of Daphne, AL; niece Gail Novelli Adams and her husband Larry and their daughter Jennifer, of San Diego, CA; niece Cynthia Jean "CJ" Bunker Bieg and her sons Erik and Aaron of Landolfshausen, Germany; nephew Dean Novelli, of Oak Ridge, TN; nephew Lee "Chip" Bunker his wife Michelle and their children Michael, Allison and Jenna Grace, of Delano, MN; nephew Robert Bunker, Jr., and his wife Dolores and their daughter Jennifer, of Peculiar, MO; and grand nephews Keith Mula of New Brunswick, NJ and Jason Mula of Hazlet, NJ.; and her dear friend Susan Akroyd of Arlington, VA.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests a donation to the First Aide Auxiliary of Waretown, NJ the Popcorn Park Zoo or similar organization of your choice.
The family wishes to recognize Marty's niece Gail Novelli Adams for her devotion to Marty and the assistance she provided in Marty's last years. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Emeritus at Stafford in Manahawkin for the loving care they provided Marty during the last seven months and to Helen Mecca from Happy Pets for her many acts of kindness.
A viewing will be held on Thursday May 8, 2014 from 10:30 until the time of service at 11:30 at the Riggs Funeral Home, 130 Rt. 9 North, Forked River, NJ 08731. Interment shall take place at Van Liew Cemetery New Brunswick, NJ.
