Two people, two cats rescued from Hilton fire.
Two people were assisted from a garage roof and two cats were rescued in a fire in Hilton Monday morning. Firefighters were called to 323 Cedar Terrace about 7:50 a.m. for a house fire with people trapped. When the first arriving firefighters responded they found a woman coming out a second floor window on to the garage roof, Hilton Fire Chief Stephen Carter said. A man was taken to an area hospital to be checked over for smoke inhalation, Carter said. Alexander Garmarye, one of the residents, said he had been asleep when his stepfather woke him up and "promptly pushed me down the stairs more or less to get me out of there." Another resident had been in the shower and they went out the front door, he said. Mark Zieziula, a neighbor who lives two doors down, said he had been leaving his house to go to work when he saw "plumes of smoke coming from it and said to myself that's not right and ran over to it." He talked to Garmarye who was still disoriented from waking up suddenly and learned the parents were still inside. Zieziula said he went back to his house to get a ladder and realized it wasn't big enough. By that time a volunteer firefighter who lives behind them was on scene with the two of them were hollering to them up the stairs, "Hey! You gotta get out, you gotta get out!" Shortly after, the couple exited out a second floor window onto a garage roof and were assisted off by Zieziula and the volunteer firefighter with an extension ladder they found on the side of the house. The fire, which started in the basement and traveled in the walls to the attic, took about a half hour to get under control, Carter said. Two of the five cats received smoke inhalation treatment. The condition of the other three cats is unknown. The American Red Cross of Greater Rochester is assisting the family. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Hilton, N.Y. - Four people were rescued from their burning home early Monday morning. The fire happened around 8 a.m. on Cedar Terrace in Hilton. Mark Zieziula, a neighbor, was leaving for work saw the smoke coming out of the house. "I went over and tried to assist as much as I could." He found the home owners' son outside. He told Zieziula his parents were still inside. "I started hollering, 'you got to get out, you got to get out,' but the didn't hear me right away." "I was in the shower so I really didn't have time to think about it," said Jonathan Morris. He and his friend who lived inside the home were able to get out. "Luckily our neighbors had a ladder." Zieziula helped firefighters set up a rescue ladder so two people could be rescued from an upstairs window. A frozen fire hydrant had to be circumvented for firefighters to get a water line to the truck, but crews were still able to control the fire in 30 minutes. One of the people inside the house was taken to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries. Four pets inside the home were rescued and given oxygen on scene. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
